If they don’t join together, they will be defeated, hence the chopped snake. The cartoonist’s opinion on this issue is that the colonies have to join together. The evidence for this is the slogan “Join, or die.” To make this cartoon more convincing, the cartoonist could have enlarged the “Die” in the slogan.
